Apple Picking

How many people?

How many baskets?

How many apples fit in the baskets?

One day peopleperson went to pick apples.
They had baskets to share
so each person had baskets to fill and baskets were left at home.
÷ = remainder

Each basket held apples. Since everyone filled their baskets, each person took home m apples.

x = m

With not enough baskets to go around, they cancelled apple picking and went for a hike.

Alice took home m apples. She wanted to make apple pie. It takes 6 apples per pie, so she had enough apples to make pies with apples leftover.

m ÷ 6 = remainder

However, she only had enough other ingredients for 5 pies, so she had m apples left over for other uses.

5 x 6 = 30

30 + m = m

Bob and Charlie took their apples home and made apple sauce.

Each batch of apple sauce uses up about 36 apples and makes 8 jars, so they made batches.
